Japanese Print Description
YOSHIMORI (1830-1884)
Tsuta ni niwatori to taiko (Rooster, Drum and Ivy)
Signed: Yoshimori
Dated 1857
A rooster with two chicks perched on a large drum, with the leaves of ivy changing color in autumn. Depicts an old tale of a drum placed outside the palace gates, for visitors to sound when desiring an audience with the daimyo. During times of wise rule, the drum was never needed, so roosters could rest atop the drum undisturbed.
