Japanese Print Description
Yokogawa Kampei Munenori in the snow with dripping hair, wringing out his clothes
aka Yokokawa (Yukukawa) kanbei Munetoshi
Series: Seichu gishi shozo (Portraits of the Faithful Samurai of True Loyalty)
Publisher: Sumiyoshi-ya Masagoro
Yokogawa Kampei is generally credited to be the first one to get into the living quarters of Kira’s mansion during the night attack. Five days before the raid he wrote a farewell letter which stated that “tears were the lot of a warrior”. Perhaps Kuniyoshi is recalling that last sentiment symbolically in this portrait. In any event, the ronin certainly knew what their fate was likely going to be.
Oban Tate-e. Very good impression and colors. A little trimmed
