Japanese Print Description

Kuniyoshi (1798-1861)

Nakamura Kansuke Masatatsu (Nakamura Kansuke Tadatoki)
Series: Seichu gishi shozo  (Portraits of the Faithful Samurai of True Loyalty
1852

Warding off hot ashes that have been thrown at him by a chabuzo (a tea attendant or personal attendant). Many consider this the finest design in this rare series, ( only 12 of these Ronin prints are known). The series borrows heavily from western portraiture including imitation western characters in the green borders of the title cartouche.

The poem in the cartouche reads:
Surely there will be teahouses
where we can drink amidst plums
on the journey to the other world.

Oban Tate-e.  Fine impression, colours, and condition. A little trimmed.
