Spirit of Kampei Leading the Attack over Kira’s wall
Artist: Kunichika (1835-1900)
Series:  Seichu Meimei den
Publisher:  Tsunashima Kamekichi (?)
c 1895

Kampei, who had died prior to the night attack, is shown as a ghost initiating the vendetta on the 14th day of the 12th month in this print.  Had he lived he would have been the 48thconspirator.  It is perhaps the best design, of an uncommon series by Kunichika.  The dynamic portrait (actor Ichikawa Sadanji as Kampei) of this ghostly figure is Kunichika at his artistic best.  The forward thrust of the spirit compels us, the viewers, like the other Ronin over the wall to the household below.

Oban tate-e.  A wormhole, and some very slight creasing.
