Hiroshige shows us a small section of a strip of land, perched on a sandbar, which stretches over 2 miles across Miyazu Bay on Japan’s west coast. It is known as Ama-no-hashi-date (The Bridge of Heaven). This strip of land is still covered in pine trees, as it was when Hiroshige illustrated it. It is considered one of “Japan’s three famous scenic views”. It has an unusual custom. If one faces away from the view, then bends and looks at it through one’s legs, it is supposed to look like a mirage suspended in the air. To the bottom right is a torii gate, indicating a nearby Shinto shrine.
