1857
Two poor streetwalkers from a village on the east side of the Sumida cross to the amusement areas on the west side to ply their trade. They stand in the prow of a ferry arriving at Onmayagashi Landing southeast of Asakusa. Eight ferry boats worked this crossing; a bridge would not be built here until 1874. The women’s white painted faces stand out in the cold dark night. Even at this late hour the river is busy with boat traffic in this haunting design.
