Boats sit at anchor off the port of Shimonoseki at the southwestern tip of Honshu, Japan’s largest island, separated from the island of Kyushu by the Kanmon Straight. Perhaps the two ladies in the foreground are crossing the Straight? Today they could travel through a tunnel or across a suspension bridge. The spot has great historical significance as it was the scene of the naval battle of Dan-no-ura in 1185, the final battle of a civil war at which the Minamoto clan defeated the Taira clan and assumed control of Japan.
