Japanese Print Description
KUNICHIKA (1835-1900)
Ichikawa Danjuro IX as Tokugawa Ieyasu
Signed: Kunichika hitsu
Play: Sakai no Taiko
Series: 100 Roles of Danjuro IX
Publisher: Fukuda Kumajiro
Danjuro IX was the first kabuki actor to act in “living history” plays (katsureki geki) or plays based on actual historical fact. Written with Danjuro IX in mind this is one of the first “historical” plays, about the 1st Tokugawa Shogun, and one of Danjuro IXs shin Kabuki Juhachiban (32 favorite plays). Rarely performed today and challenging to perform because Ieyasu in particular, like the politician he is, says one thing but means another throughout the play.
Very good impression and colors. Album backing. Deluxe printing with metallic pigments, burnishing and gauffrage effects. A few small spots.
Sold with a copy of a photograph of Danjuro IX performing as Tokugawa Ieyasu
