Shini-e Triptych

Bando Shuka, Danjuro VIII and Utaemon IV
Shini-e Triptych

Japanese Print Description

Attr to KUNISADA (1786-1865)

Memorial Portraits (Shini-e) of Bando Shuka I (L), Ichikawa Danjuro VIII (C), and Nakamura Utaemon IV
Unsigned (as always)

Oban Triptych.  Very good impression, and colours  Very light backing, slight occasional dirt, and a few minor wormholes on edges of sheets.  Extremely rare to find memorial portraits (Shini-e) of three different actors.  They are depicted in a fusion of Shinto/Buddhist characters.  The popularity of Shini-e was fueled by the death of the extremely popular Kabuki actor, Ichikawa Danjuro VIII in the 8th month of 1854 (Sometimes erroneously given as the date of this triptych).  Nakamura Utaemon had died in 1852 but Bando Shuka is clearly identified here as dying in 3 / 1855 in this triptych.
